Visit to Gubin (PL) on Thursday June 11th 1998

Information:

For the Germans Gubin in Poland is a nice place for shopping. Gasoline, cigarettes, CD's and clothing are very cheap. One carton with cigarettes costs 20 DM. In Poland they import damaged cars and still the cars cost a lot of money!!

After the second Worldwar the border between Germany and Poland was moved to the west, the river Oder became the new border. The result was that Guben was split in two parts, a Polish and a German part. Now eights years after the 'Wende' you can see a big differance. The German part is mainly restored but in the Polish part you can still see the damages of the second Worldwar. For instance the big church beside the bridge in Gubin is closed and without roof.
